Simple Homemade Laundry Detergent
Lindsay Spurrier • March 8, 2022
Why is it so hard to find a GOOD laundry detergent?
If you are like me, I am always looking for something better, something more sustainable, and something more effective! Searching for something like laundry detergent sounds so silly but we needed a product that met these demands...
- It had to work well! We live on a homestead and life gets messy!
- It had to be acceptable for sensitive skin. Both Odin and I react to almost everything fragrance wise!
- It had to be cost effective. There is no need to spend an arm and a leg on detergent when you have 5 babies to feed!
Needless to say, we struggled to find one that worked with all of these areas... So, what's a gal to do except make her own!

Here is an easy-to-follow recipe that DID hit all of our needs!
All you need to get started is...
Directions
- Grate 1 bar of Grandma's Lye Soap into a pot. Add enough water to cover shreds and on medium heat, melt. Make sure to watch closely because this can cook over fast!
- Pour melted mixture into your clean 5 gallon bucket.
- Add 2 cups of Borax to the 5 gallon bucket and start adding hot water. Stir to dissolve.
- Once dissolved, add 2 cups of Super Washing Soda. Keep stirring and adding water till you have your bucket almost full. Stop about 2" from the top of the bucket.
- Mix well. Then let sit for 24 hours.
- Mix well before each use. Use 1 cup of mixture per load of laundry.
I would love to hear how this recipe worked for you! Make sure to leave a comment below.
